The 04% spending increase allocated to the NHS over the next four years seems derisory to me, particularly when you compare it to the 6% annual increase enjoyed over the last decade.

King's Fund economist John Appleby warns that the annual 0.1% rise will easily be swallowed up in pay and VAT increases.

And NHS organisations also have to deliver £20bn efficiency savings over four years.

Tough times ahead.
