There needs to be a replacement for this drug, or a therapy replacement altogether with regards to drug rehab. As someone directly involved with managemnet of drug misusers I am fed up with the way they are demonised and with reactionary articles like this one. I prefer to look at the evidence and the evidence is that methadone maintenance therapy is way out in front when it comes to stablising and, ultimately, withdrawing drug misusers. It reduces crime; it reduces social disruption; it reduces relapse rates. What this article highlights is NOT a problem with methadone maintenance - it's a problem of poor supervision and poor prescribing practices. Those are the issues which need to be challenged. |

Surely, the article above focuses on a problem of improper treatment by the methadone prescribers or its misuse or overdoses. Hence a properly supervised administration by competent psychiatrist is needed. |
