The medical bag for the doctor's car should include oxygen, bag-valve-mask resuscitator, and portable suctio, emergency medications, and resuscitation devices plus two (optional) ACLS drugs and a portable cardioverter-defibrillator. When planning a car first aid kit, there is only one item that is absolutely necessary. No matter what you pack for bandaging material, splints, or even if you have a shield for doing mouth to mouth, your first aid kit must have a cellular phone. There is no better tool in the event of an emergency. If you can't access emergency medical services, your car first aid kit is not complete. Anyone with a medical problem should have that medical information easily accessible at all times. There are several ways to organize medical information and make it available to rescuers. For the rest of your first aid kit, you'll need:

You have no duty of care to anyone who is sick or needs treatment in a public place. If you do try to treat them them you MUST be competent to treat them - if you are not and you try to treat them, you are negligent. So be very careful indeed about how you equip youreself, and how you put yourself forward! But many doctors will want to help, especially if the casualty is collapsed. Then, first, Acute Basic Life Support, ABC(DE). Airway, Breathing, Circulation (Disabiity, Exposure, but they come very much last). And the latest Resusc.Council advice for the public is to skip 'B' and go straight to CPR if the patient is unconcious. ANY DOCTOR SHOULD BE COMPETENT TO DO THIS, WITH NO EQUIPMENT AT ALL! If you want to be a First Responder, then then a bargain is available, in the many hundreds of First Responder first aid bum-bags that are being used at the Olympic Games! SPS will be offering these at a bargain price. See: http://www.spservices.co.uk/item/LondonKits_KittedEx-LondonGreenBumBagwithBasicFirstAidContents_137_74_4099_0.html Click on the link to see what they contain. Then, what is the situation? Do you plan to go the assistance of an RTA victim? In which case the above applies, plus inline neck stabilisation (difficult to do by yourself!). Or drowning, electrocution, severe laceration or crush trauma, or some other life threatening injury? Again NO EQUIPMENT REQUIRED! IMHO, this is all that is necessary, until the Ambulance crew arrives, fully equipped to deal with nything up to and including endotracheal intubation, or at least the insetion of a iGel airway device. If you want the full kit, again SPS are offering post-Olympic full BLS/Intermediate Back-packs at a bargain price, but still £500! And you will have to maintain the pack, keep the disposable items and drugs in date, by buying them new when they expire, not cheap!. They will also sell you a full Advanced Life Support/Rapid Sequence Induction back pack with a full drug pack that you will have to maintain. BUt again, you MUST be competent, to even offer to treat a cut or graze. A member of the public can do so and only have the responsibility of a Good Samaritan. If you say, I am a doctor, then you are libable for any complication that arises. Kirked will tell us that UK courts are most unlikely to find a Good Samaritan doctor negligent, but people aren't grateful and are litigious. As they used to say on "Hill Street Blues", "Let's be careful out there!" John |
