Those of you following the trials of the health and social care bill may be interested in the following that I spotted on BBC news this evening: "Andrew Lansley says he has changed his mind about the benefits of competition in the NHS since saying some years ago that "the first guiding principle" of reform should be to "maximise competition"*. The Tories should have known of this as it was they under Thatcher who first tried to make the NHS competitive. At that time, just as at this, GPs were given budgets for secondary care, to control the overweening and exploitive hospital consultants. The result locally (I shouldn't speak nataionally) was that at least one hospital came within two weeks and £20K of being insolvent and unable to pay its staff, when GPs sent all their joint replacements to a private hospital. Clearly Lansley was doing something else at that time, maybe growing up - or has he? He seems impulsive and emotional, is he still a political adolescent? John |
