The British Liver Trust has said that a short burst of alcohol abstinence is pretty much pointless and that it is better to stave off alcohol in regular periods throughout the year.

After Christmas, we tend to try and eat and drink less, and exericse more in an attempt to repent for our gluttonous excesses. But this is often short lived and is perhaps a misguided -psychological act to redress the balance.

Can a January detox ever be beneficial in the long run?

Yes it is a waste of time unless it is follwed by a February, March, april, may, june, july, august, september, october, november, december, and January - again Detox.   After I left the Military in 1987, I gave up drinking pretty much 100%,  Tired of the Hangovers, and not enough Vitamin B-1 to make it feel better. For me, a nice hot cup of Earl Grey Tea will be all I need...  DuaneF

Absolutely Duane!
Well, the bit about 'detoxing' (whatever that means - it can mean coffee enemas!).

I'm still a drinker, I hope in moderation, but at Christmas the reasons for drinking, good people, good conversation, good food (especially the good food!) , come around more frequently, so the bottle comes out more often.   I've put on 3 kgs, that will have to come off - I was already knocking on the door of BMI 30, and I'm now through, just and with no room to spare.

Awesome JohnD,  I laughed real hard about the coffee Enemas,  never tried that yet,  Nor do I anticipate doing so,  I tend to like my coffee the PO route.   By the way, do you enjoy teas JohnD?  I love white and Green tea for the antioxidant value,  and I too have to lower my BMI, perhaps too much Carb content Holiday stuffing and all that.

Lapsang Soochong (smoke tea), Earl Grey, or good old Typhoo, all good, Duane, but instant coffee is easiest and quickest, and provides a good kick, unless its decaff.

In my town we have a coffee shop.  Big deal, I hear you cry, Starbucks is everywhere.    Atkinson's has been in business for 200 years, and the shop hasn't changed in that time.   Plank floor, sacks of raw beans, mahogany counter, great box-drawers behind the counter where the beans are stored, portrait of the founder above (looks a bit like the Duke of Wellington, and dressed the same).   They offer at least forty different beans in stock, including single-plantation and weigh them out on brass scales in front of you.    Their regular roasting makes walking down that street a gateway to heaven.  Somehow, coffee never tastes as good as it roasts!
