In Response to Re: Higgs boson-like particle announced in Melbourne, Australia tonight: But hold it a moment - we all know Higgs, but who was Bose? Of the Boson? Satyendra Nath Bose (1894-1974) was one the greatest scientists (so-far) of India. As well as the group of fundamental particles, the bosons, his name is further honoured by being linked with that of Einstein in the Bose-Einstein condensate, a macro-world expression of quantum phenomena. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satyendra_Nath_Bose John Posted by John D Now you all know that I'm not the guy to blow my own trumpet. Oh, no, shy, retiring, modest, me. So you will be pleased to know that my penetrating, knowledgeable, prescient even comment above has the approval of so important a scientific organ as the New Scientist, which in its turn is merely reporting the words of many eminent scientists. This article: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21528733.800-higgs-discovery-giants-of-physics-overlooked.html after mentioning Abdus Salam, goes on to quote Jim Al-Khalili as saying that Bose was a giant among physicists, and the Indian Press Association has released "Bose: Higgs Boson's Forgotten Hero". I thang yew, I thang yew. John |

I n Response to Re: Higgs boson-like particle announced in Melbourne, Australia tonight: Sorry guys, but this was announced at 0830 here in the Wetsmonster Hal, at a press meeting video linked to CERN. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-18702455. That it won't hit the news in Melbourne until tonight is a penalty of living just to the East of the International Date LIne! But hold it a moment - we all know Higgs, but who was Bose? Of the Boson? Satyendra Nath Bose (1894-1974) was one the greatest scientists (so-far) of India. As well as the group of fundamental particles, the bosons, his name is further honoured by being linked with that of Einstein in the Bose-Einstein condensate, a macro-world expression of quantum phenomena. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satyendra_Nath_Bose John Posted by John D John D Thank you for the post. There was an article about Satyendra Nath Bose in Newsweek this week. He worked/collaborated with Einstein and apparently was brilliant. I think people are overlooking his contribution. |

It is good news for Physics and for all. I think the controversy over the credit of it may be there as it happens (sometimes): New Scientist was taking a peak on it: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21328575.000-what-to-call-the-particle-formerly-known-as-higgs.html |
