In Response to Re: Higgs boson-like particle announced in Melbourne, Australia tonight: Thanks for the link - the BBC have not caught up with this yet - the Brits are currently obsessed by the downfall of Bob Diamond. Posted by spurlock Dear Spurlock You can read the BBC story here

Sorry guys, but this was announced at 0830 here in the Wetsmonster Hal, at a press meeting video linked to CERN. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-18702455. That it won't hit the news in Melbourne until tonight is a penalty of living just to the East of the International Date LIne! But hold it a moment - we all know Higgs, but who was Bose? Of the Boson? Satyendra Nath Bose (1894-1974) was one the greatest scientists (so-far) of India. As well as the group of fundamental particles, the bosons, his name is further honoured by being linked with that of Einstein in the Bose-Einstein condensate, a macro-world expression of quantum phenomena. The point of the Hunt for Higgs was that it would complete the set, the Standard Model for subatomic particles. But that model lacks gravity, the LHC is only running at about half power, and supersymmetry beckons, with analogue particles for all the Standard Model set, some vastly more massive than their counterparts. In case you don't know, Cern has it's own website, where it frequently posts the most eminent scientists talking about their work. Here's John Ellis (who could play God in any Hollywood film) the Clerk Maxwell Professor of Theoretical Physics at King's College London talking a few days ago about what the 'discovery' of the Higgs means and the future at the LHC. http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1459121 John |

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satyendra_Nath_Bose John Posted by John D I did not post this as some sort of competition and noted last night a BBC post on this. It is just that there was a joint meeting of CERN in Melbourne and Geneva last night our time. There were scientists from all over the world involved including from Australia. As for Australia being east of the International Date Line this is wrong too. We are Greenwich (GMT) +10 hrs. We are east of you in terms of time but not that much east. This is not the UK planting a flag in a new Terra Nullius. I announced a fundamental discovery which transcends national boundaries, childish territorialism and dogs urinating on posts. The Big Bang was not a British invention and there are no Union Jacks out there located over Black Holes.
