The 52-year-old is making excellent progress, according to medical experts not involved in his care who watched a video released this week by the Illinois Republican's office. Kirk is seen in the video climbing stairs and walking on a treadmill with a therapist's help.
Kirk credits lead researcher and physical therapist T. George Hornby at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, whose work may change standard therapy for stroke patients. During Kirk's nine weeks participating in Hornby's research, he walked nearly 15 miles and climbed 145 flights of stairs

Thanks for posting this. As someone involved in stroke rehab work I have always believed that prompt and excellent physiotherapy is the key and this confirms that view. Will share with my local physio colleagues.

I can tell you based on what we did together with my late father who suffered two strokes, that prompt physiotherapy and every day stubborn work does help. There were stages when nobody believed he would stand on his feet and walk. But he managed, despite a serious stroke.
I saw others also who made far better progress than predicted when intensive physiotherapy was administered. And as soon as possible. Our brain has more capabilities than we thought previously.

Thanks for a good article. There nothing important than exercises & physiotherapy with rehabilitation in treating patients of stroke.
Instead of asking to walk once down an unobstructed hallway, for example, if a patient is asked to walk around obstacles, to walk while things are bumping into him and to climb stairs, would definitely end in good recovery.

Thank you all for your comments but stroke Rehabilitation is a a complex and multidiscipinary intervention with Pysiotherapy and exercise only being a part of the plan.
There is much more to Stroke Rehab than PT alone and includes interventions by the occupational therapist, Speech and language pathologist, Vocatioal counceller, Prosthetist ( for fabrication of splints if needed), psychologist,  Rehab Nurse and the Rehabilitation Physician.

Some good  links to stroke Rehab and its components here

I intentionally didn't go into all these details. That is absolutely necessary. And another very important thing: the family involved in carrying out the exercises and practicing again and again, including all above mentioned. Just as teacher lesson is only part of the learning process, so is the case here. Without patient doing all on regular basis it won't be enough. Another important issue: almost all will experience the scarring process when tonus will rise and rigidity can appear months after the stroke. So, again, a lot of practice can help reduce that element.

Thanks for this.  I was recently reminded of how devastating this illness can be when I had to repatriate a previoulsy very active lady who suffered a sudden embolic stroke leaving her with a dense hemiplegia back to Australia from Europe.  Personally I find the devastation left by a CVA to be one of the most unfortunate things that can befall a person.

However I am reminded of the Brain's plasticity.  It is not 'recovery' that one is looking for with physiotherapy, but training other parts of the brain to take-over the some of the lost functions.  This is a process that is akin to re-learning those skill from the very beginning and therefore the more that it is done and repeated, first creating and then facilitating new pathways), the more the chance of functional 'recovery'.

So it's not just regulary therapy, but lots and lots of it that is the key.
