Hurrah- finally the truth is out and we don't all need to drink 8 glasses of water a day like the manufacturers of bottle water keep telling us. An article by Margaret McCartney in the BMJ says there

5-10 litres a day?
At about 300mls per glass/mug thats 16-32 drinks a day, or a drink every 30 minutes of the working day. That's without the trips to the loo to get rid of it.

Hands up anyone here who is too busy or too constrained by their work, surgeons, midwives, anaesthetists, ICU staff, ward nurses, in fact anyone in medicine with a job that doesn't involve sitting at a desk all day, who could indulge themselves in such a habit?

Anyway, back to physiology. We are not fish. We possess kidneys that are capable of regulating our internal hydration, in health anyway, by excreting weak or concentrated urine as required. Colourless urine is just a sign that your kidneys are working well and that they have filtered and chucked out the water from the last cup of coffee that you had.
