It's generally accepted that Mr Boyle's opening ceremony was a triumph. However, there have been some dissenting voices at how the NHS was portrayed (mainly from right wingers) and that it was a rose-tinted view.  It's a national institution (some say, even a religion) and lord knows it isn't perfect, but I thought it was a great celebration of the NHS and all of those who work for her...but others might disagree.

I think the author of this article makes some excellent points - there is NO excuse for poor care or neglect by anyone in the NHS and when problems arise (as they enivitably will do) they need to be tackled and resolved with utmost haste.
But I have a number of issues with the article.
Firstly, many of the issues the author highlights relate to the NHS in England and are not necessarily reflected in the NHS in Scotland.
Secondly, the coalition Government's reforms did not apply in Scotland.
Thirdly, the Health and Social Care Bill will live or die on its own merits - not because of anything Danny Boyle says or does. But the fundamental problem is that the Bill is largely without merit and it is driven by ideology not evidence.
Fourthly, the UK Government continues to under-spend on healthcare as a percentag of GDP such that we are between 9 and 10% whilst the much-vaunted French system uses over 11% of GDP.
Finally, the probelms that do exist with the NHS do NOT need radical overall - they need simple changes. There is nothing complicated about better standards of cleaning, training or communication skills. What we do not need are the ever-growing layers of middle-grade bureaucrats and micro-management.

Thought it was good, though also thought that direct reference to GOSH inappropriate. Participation of staff representing all NHS staff fine but didnt need logo etc

Aidan Burley is the Tory MP sacked as a parliamentary private secretary after it was revealed he attended a stag party in France where a guest wore a replica SS uniform. (As did a member of the Royal Family not so long ago, who is still in post, but that's another matter.    MP's are required to exercise judgement.  Future kings do not.)   So we needn't remember his name, we won't be hearing it again., Meanwhile he was not the only right wing twit to go so far over the top about the NHS item, as to make themselves look or sound ridiculous.

"Yes, a brilliant show and Danny Boyle's a genius. But why have so many been taken in by his Marxist propaganda?"  sneered Stephen Glover of the Daily Mail. See his miserable mug on the letterhead at: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2182328/London-2012-opening-ceremony-Yes-brilliant-Danny-Boyles-genius-But-taken-Marxist-propaganda.html , but then the Daily Mail isn't ever the greatest supporter or the most skilful critic  of the NHS, or anything else.

As for American reporters, so insular that they have done no homework about British history as to completely confuse Great Ormond Street Hospital with a commercial heath insurance company (see http://www.uhc.com/), we need not be concerned about them either except to commiserate with Duane about a decline in the qulaity of American Journalism.  Every winner of the Pulitzer prize must be spitting blood.

Meanwhile, we should remember that the Standard is owned by Evgeny Lebedev, who is a crony of Cameron;  viz, a sentence in the article, "Under this Government, run by a Prime Minister with genuine insight and gratitude for the health service" .  Mr Lebedev has rosetinted spectacles of his own.
