If GPs are to commission services, then how will the NHS, patients and the public know if services are being commissioned fairly and in the best interests of patients? From a BMJ news story: David Bennett, the chair and interim chief executive of Monitor (the regulator), told a BMJ/King’s Fund debate “It’s not yet entirely clear how all this is going to work,” he said. He said the issue of “self supply” by GPs was complex. “Our starting point will be very simple. Whatever a GP does, as a commissioner or provider, they need to demonstrate it’s in the best interests of patients.” http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d7703 |
