Like US Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, disease awareness has made it into the US calendar. In 2012 we have 175 officially designated “national health observances,” including rabies day, sleep awareness week, endometriosis awareness month, and many observances for heart disease and a variety of cancers.1 None is more prominent than breast cancer awareness month, otherwise known as “October.” And no organisation has done more to promote this observance than Susan G Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest breast cancer charity and creator of the ubiquitous “pink ribbon,” which each year aims to “turn the country pink for national breast cancer awareness month

Unfortunately, there is a big mismatch between the strength of evidence in support of screening and the strength of Komen’s advocacy for it. A growing and increasingly accepted body of evidence shows that although screening may reduce a woman’s chance of dying from breast cancer by a small amount, it also causes major harms

How can you even begin to Equate Independence Day,  Thanksgiving, and Christmas with Mammography?     Christmas is the Christian Holy day of observing the brith of Jesus!   Now were I to invoke a Muslim Holy day,  you and other Muslims would take umbrage to the comparison, rightly so!   By the way,  Mammography is a good thing,  and causes no harm!    In fact it is a usefull screening tool!
WOW - I cannot even believe this post!     DuaneF

The "brith of Jeus", Duane?

Do you mean the Bris, the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ on the first of Janauary, eight days after Christmas, as it should be be Jewish custom?

Duane ! Did you actually read the whole post by clicking the link before commenting.

I did NOT compare Christian holy days with Mammorgaphy ( and never will do so) . It were the (US based) authors whose affiliations are as follows

  1. 1VA Outcomes Group, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, White River Junction, Vermont 05009, USA
  2. 2Center for Medicine and the Media, The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Lebanon, New Hampshire, USA

And how can you claim with such authority that it causes NO harm, Please read the post and the arguments again.

Yes John,   I know the dates are wrong on the Birthdate of Jesus,   so is your spelling!     I guess Doctors are grammatically challenged.      Fine.  I was referencing that mammography is a good thing.  DuaneF

Sure every body is entiltled to his/her own opinion and it should be respected.

I was just clarifying that i did not make any comparision between Christmas and Mammograpghy ( as your earlier post mentioned). It was the authors description.

Poster on building outside London Bridge station. (I paraphrase, as I made no notes, Tut.)

"MRI scans! Have your sports injury properly diagnosed for only £250!"

Hi Duane - I'm afraid your view on mammography is not backed up by the evidence because that shows that it DOES do harm and the evidence of benefit is limited to say the least. But don't take my word for it. Read these excellent blogs by Margartet McCartney here in the UK :

Or read the excellent book by your compatriot H. Gilbert Welch, Professor of Community and Family Medicine at the Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire:
