Is the fact that a Doctor, Nurse Practicioner, or PA, or Chiropracter etc, that is Atheist more likely to be viewed with suspicion than a Religious minded Health care provider. I fear that this debate could easily descend into a classic doc2doc discussion on religion itself instead of the question in hand. This question is a simple matter of perception. The poll question you pose is slightly misleading as it is not asking 'Do you think athesits etc...' but instead '...Are atheists' which is looking for evidence. Personally I do not believe that atheists are any more distrusted and I feel the argument is futile if you start to witter about 'you can only have a moral compass if you are religious..' which is a silly comment (one which I know you did not state but what most people will probably assume you meant) as ones moral compass can ber obtained by simply having good parents whether they be atheist or not. I wait with baited breath to see where this discussion leads...

Who would you trust more: Person A - who leads his life according to "some" book/books written centuries ago, by people who did not know that our planet evolves around the orbit of the sun. Person B - who leads his life according to his own reasoning and understanding of the world. I would say, both are trustworthy and untrustworthy to the same extent. As for extreme forms of relegion - i would definitely prefer a doctor who does not think that women came from a mans rib, or that virgins await you in heaven. This health professionals I would not trust. |

My goodness - doc2doc seems to be mutuating into Theology Weekly. Anyway, the fundamnetal answer to your question Duane is that the world is full of bigots. There are those who will not trust a doc if they know they are atheist. But by the same token there are those who will not trust a doctor because of the doctor's religion or sex or sexuality or politics or race or nationality or colour of skin or whatever. All that proves is that bigotry, ignorance and stupidity thrive everywhere when good people say nothing. |

Good points steve, I only offered the post as an inquiry into what patients might think. For instance I once had surgery and later found out the Surgeon hated Police Officers, now knowing that going into surgery might have caused me to change surgeons since I am a veteran law enforcement officer. It does beg the question of safety when dealing with a Bigoted mindset. DuaneF |
