...at least according to Care Not Killing - because I have the audacity to believe that terminally ill, mentally competent, rational human beings have the right to chose when, where and how they die. Interestingly Sir Graeme Catto, former President of the General Medical Council, believes the same thing so maybe he is behaving like a Nazi too.

And people wonder why faith-based lobby groups get a bad name. This is right up there with Pro-life thinking it's okay to murder doctors and nurses who work in family planning services. So enlightened...

Skysteve I am with you 100% on this issue. In my view everyone has the right to determine their own destiny if terminally ill or for example struck down with Locked In Syndrome.  When religious groups resort to calling people nazis you know that the substance of their argument has crumbled and they cannot discuss this issue with intelligence and calm rational debate.

As you say in the USA in particular there are plenty of individuals who abhor termination of pregnancy but have no qualms about murdering Doctors and Nurses working in such specialities.

Kirked,   I dont think your behaving like a Nazi.    In fact I agree with your point on the Abortion Doctor killings.   Any christian or otgher so called religious person who murders is going 100% against their own credo.  Hence the term FAKE CHRISTIANS>   Unfortunately we have many in the USA.   DuaneF

You may be aware of Godwin's Law of Internet Message Boards
"As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler pproaches one"

Was this here on DqD, Steve? Your link doesn'r refer to any doctor  in particular.
Was it a long or short thread?

John

Hopefully those who support  a change in the law are signed up as supporters of HPAD (Health Professionals for Assisted Dying). Look at their website - there are some pretty eminent folk there.
The big worry is that the prolongers of existence come what may seem to have made pretty steady progress over the past 50 years. It is awful that a flicker of activity on a scan - which  may not mean anything in terms of meaningful hope - can convert PVS into MCS and make the individual liable to the full rigours of modern "medicine". And there are those who wish to overturn any wishes the patient might have expressed beforehand , however carefully thought through. It is even worse to realise the suffering one might have to endure can depend on the religion of the "carer"..

Hi JohnD - no, thankfully, none of the good people on Doc2Doc have talked in such terms - but Care Not Killing has in a tawdry attempt to get publicity. This is against the background of the debate in Scotland and the Bill working its way through due process in the Scottish Parliament to which I have given evidence.

The odious claim that those of us who support self-determination in matters of dying are mirroring some aspects of Naziism is beneath contempt. CNK should apologise but they won't because in order to make such comparisons in the first place you have to lack compassion and humility.

In the end of the day those of us who support a change in legislation are quite clear - no doctor or relative or patient should be compelled to be involved. We are advocating for autonomy and freedom of choice. In contrast CNK wish to force their view on everyone by removing such autonomy and choice. So tell me, who is acting like the Fascist?

I absolutely agree with skyesteve. One should have full rights to choose their own destiny & the decision to die when terminally ill & in a non-treatable condition.
