The Lancet has a feature on the achievement of Mexico in providing universal health cover (UHC)for its people. http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2812%2961342-7/fulltext?elsca1=ETOC-LANCET&elsca2=email&elsca3=E24A35F Mexico has a population of 112 million, of whom 42% previously had no health insurance. That is 52 million Mexicans, strangely the same number as Americans who have no health cover. That they are only 16% of the population of the US emphasises even more the Mexican achievement. http://www.commonwealthfund.org/News/News-Releases/2011/Mar/New-Health-Insurance-Survey.aspx When in that much richer country, President Obama has had such difficulty in legislating for a lesser version of UHC, I wonder how this will affect the outcome of his struggle? The Lancet is to publish further studies of the introduction of UHC in other countries. Watch that space! John |
