After running to yet another emergency in the last few minutes of my busy week of nights, morning sickness got the better of me and I asked if one of the day team could come and take over. They don't know I'm pregnant but probably guessed. A colleague kindly came, but I was met with the response from my senior: 'you start something, you finish it' and when I replied that I did not want to vomit on the patient, I was informed rather aggressively '....registrars DO NOT get pregnant'. A joke perhaps, but I did not find it particularly funny. I have not had a day off sick in 4 years and this is the first time I have asked for assistance for feeling unwell. Maybe it's the hormones and I need to develop a thicker skin, but I felt this was pretty unreasonable. Any advice on dealing with negative attitudes as I doubt this will be the last?

Dear ZAC,

I must admit to a moment of annoyance myself, when a recently appointed registrar announced that she (I can use the feminine article with confidence for once when describing a doctor) was going on sick leave for the remainder of her new pregnancy.   That she had been in post less than a month, and had been incapacitated by hyperemesis in her first pregnancy, lead me to unworthy thoughts that my department and I were being taken advantage of.   But we managed, by working the other trainees near to death, and the occasional locum.

And I've noticed, in a department that is far from hideously male, that my female colleagues tend to become pregnant for the first time soon after achieving consultant status.  The effect on the hideous part of the department is amusing, as people who I had considered right- or rather left-thinking become unreconstructed chauvinists, fulminating against the occasional imposition that those absent on maternity leave imposed on them.

But I have achieved a sort of Nirvana, and am relaxed about this.    Good on my female colleagues, and bon voyage on the greatest journey that men can never share.   After all, as Mark Twain nearly said, "What would male consultants be without women? Scarce, sir...mighty scarce.”

I think you have to remember that people feel stretched as it is and it is easy to get wound up if you think someone might not be working at 100% for whatever reason, I never received any negative comments during my first pregnancy but I had been doing the job for years and was quite frankly fussed over! Hopefully as soon as the bump shows they will be vacating chairs for you and making you tea.

The compassion of doctors does not extend so well to doctors.

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is horrible. Something men and those lucky pregnant women who don't suffer with it will never really understand.

Those who say "pregnancy is not an illness, just get on with it!" probably fall into one of those categories too

Zac, you shouldn't let yourself get bullied into feeling guilty.

Poor you, that sounds rotten. I am not surprised you felt annoyed, I would have felt cross too. I had 2 babies when I was an SHO and then one whilst I was a GP registrar, it is hard to shake the attitude of some that you are skiving. Ultimately you need to adopt a single minded approach that puts you and your baby first. This may be unpopular with some but you are entitled to breaks, maternity pay and sick leave if you need it. I always pointed out to those that moaned that if I didn't stop for food or a rest and fainted then I would be no use to anyone. Also the 'you start something you finish it' comment is rubbish frankly, we work a shift system now and if you 'start something' and then need to hand over then that is the way things work now! Good luck!

Zac,
meant to note "the response from my senior: 'you start something, you finish it' "

Presuming that this was a male senior, did you ask him how he went about finishing the birth of his children?   That he started?

John

That was bullying, and should be reported as such.
