I'm applying for medicine 2013 entry, and there's one thing holding me back.

I've always wanted to have a family and be a good mum. I'm scared that in pursuing medicine I will be too busy and too tired all the time, and not see my family enough.

Any comments/advice?

Every drug has it's side effects.Medicine/surgery do kill most of the family time.Compromize will be the key.

Definitely, would it be possible provided one keeps high level of determination & be ready for some compromises.

Time management is key.   One secret I use is to compartmentalize each project,  and or thing I do.   I break it down into sub tasks, and keep numerous clip boards,  and sticky notes,  sometimes I have orange sticky notes Bright Neon,  reminding me to read my other sticky notes,   I know sort of OCD!    DuaneF

Glad I am not the only one - my wife thinks I need therapy for OCD! I don't use clipboards but I have a kind of 'windows' operating system in my head. I open and close projects in my mind and everything is kept where it should be. I sound like I am a lunatic but for me it works really effectively and it is amazing how much info one can retain, but it is very important when to know to 'send to trash' - otherwise things can become muddled. I really do sound like a nut case!!

Hi Florencee

Dr Emma Hill, a GP Partner and mother of two, offers some words of advice about what it's like to have a baby if you're a student, junior, senior trainee or later in your career -  Read her account here on the BMA working parents pages.

I hope you find it interesting and useful.

I think your question is (or should be) less 'is it possible?' as it obviously is because there are many female doctors with kids out there and more 'is it possible for me?' I'm only a medical student at the moment so it's not quite the same but I'm managing both - I'm not doing either as well as I would like to be doing them but I'm not sure I'd ever think I was doing either of them amazingly and at least this way I have an excuse! Heheh.

There are certainly some specialties that lend themselves more to part-time or more regular working hours so those might be the ones you find yourself more interested in. If you already have children by the time you graduate, you can even do the crazy foundation years as part-time although this does of course mean they'll take you twice as long.

Medical school as a parent is an interesting beast - while you don't have the same pressures that you will have as a doctor, you also don't get many opportunities to slow down the rate of the course (you can't go 'part-time', only take entire years out) and you can't choose when you take your holidays. It's pretty full-on but I'm just about managing it with a *lot* of organisation and determination.

If someone else is doing it, generally speaking, you can do it too if you want it enough.

Cheers
Vicky
