I've had an idea for a new method of medical education, it's based on the problem based learning method that some of us may know [and hate or love!] It takes things a step further and puts you, the student, in the driving seat so you've got to make real choices. If you read those "Choose your own adventure" books when you were younger then you might have an idea of what I'm talking about.

To have a look at what I'm talking about, check out my blog at http://jonhilton.wordpress.com

A quick run down of what you can do so far:

  • You can move around by typing "Go [compass direction]"
  • You can examine a patient by typing "Examine [patient's name]"
  • You can bleep your registrar by typing "Bleep"
  • You can prescribe some drugs by typing "Prescribe [drug name]"
This is still in the really early stages so I'd love for any feedback or ideas that you come up with. If you get suck at all, just post below.

What a fun idea. I remember those books. I'm not sure about them replacing standard PBL but they'd certainly be an adjunct. The trouble is there would be so many possibilities to make them work.

As a slight aside... Google "Pre hospital care simulator" for a slightly tongue in cheek attempt at an ambulance version of what you're describing
