This week while attending my APLS course I was taught the new formulae for estimating children's weights from their ages. The new calculations factor in that the childhood poulation are increasing in weight. While browsing online I spotted this article published in an educational journal in the USA on childhood obesity and junk food in schools

Based on a study of 19,450 children followed through from 5th to 8th grade looking at weight changes and correlation to availability of junk food in schools. I was unable to access the full text to evaluate their criteria and statistical methods but their claims that there was no association certainly moves against much common theory and indeed government policy.

Their theories on their results postulates a number of reasons including that dietary preferences may be well established before 5th grade and that junk food is not only available in schools.

  • Given their apparently significant findings should the medical profession bein looking closer at their data?
  • Do we have the wrong idea and strategies in preventing childhood obesity?
  • Where should we work from here?

Who funded the research?
What were the "junk foods"?
Was just "availability" of the junk foos accessed, or was actual consumption measured?
What were the children eating on regular basis during the whole day and at home?
Were food frequency questionnaires used?
Was physical activity assessed?
What kind of statistical methods were used? What models?

I suspect many other factors were present, IE sedentary lifestyle,  connected to video games 8 hours a night, etc.  DuaneF

Thanks DrS,
I tried to see the fulltext but could not get it. It seems it is still early online. I think we should see some more results and researches to validate the findings in first hand. However, the issue is so important that the data, analysis, research method and controls all must be closely reviewed. It will definitely lead to further other assumptions especially claims from those food companies. The idea is not blame the companies from all corner but to streamline the healthy eating and lead healthy life.
Those are extremely pertinent points (Yoram's) we need look for and go ahead.
