A locum GP is not fixed to one surgery, and doesn't get help from practices for data collection from that practice. How do other locums make sure they stay on top of the audit cycle and collect the data they need?

Problems with retrospective data access and different sites, so my appraiser suggested prospectively auditing myself which I wasn't convinced was really the spirit of audit, but he's the boss.

The latest GMC advice re evidence for revalidation suggests reviews are just as good - as long as it is something looking at the quality of your work.  Eg it is probably better to do a review of your own work than a proper audit of one practice you work in sometimes which doesn't actually reflect your own practice.  This was less clear in previous guidance.

This is the wording; You will need to demonstrate that you have actively participated in a quality improvement activity or a clinical audit relevant to your work.

The RCGP have said prospective audit is absolutely fine. It may not be the Rolls Royce of audits, but it does the job. And in the time it takes to do a retrospective audit, you could have done 10 prospective ones!

Auditing your own practice with completed audit cycles is probably the best option thus effectively making it good improvement cycles.

I am as such not a great fan of the audit concept as it often does not lead to improvement but if it did for you that is okay.

I agree with some earlier comments, that prospective audits are fine; the aim is to show you are reviewing what you do, so that improvements can be made.
