The BMA have recently launched an e-learning module for BMA members - How to be a successful locum GP

Section seven of this module focuses on how to market yourself as a locum and mentions the need to demonstrate your flexibility and understanding of how things are done in your geographical area. You may find this module helpful.

There are also other very useful sections including:

  • How suited you are to locum work
  • How to prepare for work as an independent locum
  • How to manage both professionally and personally as an independent locum
  • Where to turn to for help
  • What the advantages are of a locum chambers
  • How to set up a locum chambers.

What practices need locums?  Often small ones (there are loads of these left in London), ones advertising for long term posts (often takes longer than they think to get someone into the permanent post so they need short term locums in the meantime), Ones whose principals do a lot of non-clinical work (eg on CCG boards) - so to some extent you can direct your marketing.  Make sure the practice managers know who you are and encourage feedback of patients to the practice if they like you - I have got most work from recommendations from other practices.

Do agency work further from home so you don't get contractually stuck not being able to work freelance near home because you've worked their through an agency before.

But basically you need a really good CV and to send out loads and follow them up because practices receive loads and you need to stand out.  What's your USP?  And be able to say yes to the first booking or they may not ask you again!
