I once heard a doctor say he can learn far more on Wikipedia about a drug than a pharma rep is even allowed to tell him, so why would he want to see the drug rep? What's your view? If you had to choos

What's your view? If you had to choose between Wikipedia and a drug rep to learn about a drug, which one would you choose?

I am in industry and the wikipedia page on our device http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LLLT  frequently swings from corporate vested interests in favour of LLLT (probably laser companies) to corporate vested interests against LLLT (I'm guessing pharma companies), and occasionally there is a sober academic tone (which is where the page seems to be at the time of writing) though it is inadequate on mechanisum of action and dose.

I would not expect doctors to get adequate insight on prescribing treatment from what is there today,  they might just be able to grasp the vague idea that laser beams can regenerate tissue, have an anti-inflammatory effect and induce analgesia in musculoskeletal / neuuropathic pain pathologies.

Yes I know, it sounds very Star Trek.

Wikipedia,  Web MD,  and clinical references.   But above all your brain!   learn to cross reference,  since the internet is not 100% reliable.   DuaneF

We had a similar conversation over on-call-coffee the other day.  Is it reasobable to use Wikipedia as a medical resource - I thought it was a reasonable place to start, others thought it was "dangerous".....

Drug reps have an agenda, of course they do, but they are well educated in the relevant literature, even if it has a spin from their company.

WIkipedia is mass reviewed, and crowd sourced, but those who care enough to write it will doubtless have an aganda also.

I use both to point me in the direction of the literature, then I toddle off and read it myself.

Neither of them can buy me pint anymore.....
