It is about the tree of Hippocrates.
It is over 2300 years old and is located in the island of Kos, in the Aegean sea .
The father of modern medicine was teaching under its shadow.
Specialists say that  it is too old and it will not be for more than 20 years in life.

I thought you would like to know.

Ikaros,  Thanks for this extremely informational post.    This is a great loss to Medicine and mankind,   I believe symbols are strong Archetypes of our minds, (Jungian Psychology), and should be preserved.   Someone should take cuttings and make grafts of this tree in order to preserve its grandeur.    I most forcibly request,  Indeed Demand someone do this!    Let us not lose this potent symbol of Medicine,  If you could Ikaros contact an Arborist in your country to preserve this beautifull symbol....  Thank You DuaneF

From what i read in the newspaper they are already thinking to do this.
Anyway until then you have all the  time to visit the place and see the tree  if you want to.  It is an attraction for doctors from all around the world.

Thanks for very important post. It is also important news that attempts are going on for survival of the Hippocratus tree.

I had the privilege of sitting under this very tree in 1982. I went out of my way to see it as I had just applied to medical school. Perhaps it is reaching then end of its natural lifespan and, like all things, it should be allowed to die gracefully and peacefully. But perhaps a seed...

It is this insight which I do appreciate!
The trees are not only having a 'life' but are sensitive too! It is quite likely that the trees might serve as 'messengers' between us & the almighty.

I have loved trees since I can remember - I cherish them more than any other non-human living thing. They are our lungs but we are currently choking them and suffocating ourselves to death. It is alleged that St Francis of Assissi once remarked that you can tell a lot about a human by how they treat their animals. I would argue you could substitute trees for animals and the conclusion would be the same.
The oldest tree in Scotland is in a small village known as Fortingall. It's beeen there for nearly 4000 years. It was there for nearly 3000 years before Scotland even became a country. It has seen the coming and going of foreign threats from before the Romans to the modern era. It's ancestory exceeds even the oldest families in Scotland.
If predictions about the environmental catastrophe we might face are true then it will be the trees which will carry the tell tale signs in their rings to inform future generations of their forebears folly.

Hi ikaros

This sounds like such a shame. Do you have any more information or links to the news story? We might want to feature this as a BMJ Picture of the Week!
