Matt posted a discussion earlier today about the causes of death in 1900, and 2010:

It's an interesting topic - what our grandparents expected to die from is not the same as what we expect to die from.  I can reasonably expect to not die from "consumption", diphtheria, or syphyllis.  I spend a lot of time trying to reduce my cardiovascular risk, and I'm pretty fit, generally...  So, I'll live to 90 and then get a cancer?

Statistically I should die from ischaemic heart disease.  I do live in Scotland, after all.

What do you think you'll die from?

Leave such to the Moirai; the Three Fates. This idea transcends frontiers. The Germanic Norns and in Ancient India and Egypt. Tje word Moirai comes from the Greek meaning a portion.

I think it does one no good to pontificate on this. We all know there is an odds on chance we will die on a week day and not in a leap year or on Feb 29th. Your fitness gives you no rights to a longer life just better odds but even the fittest die of cancer or a sudden heart attack.

Live a good and generous life and love life and the people on your journey. There are more dead than alive; more unborn than alive. This is a mere shining of light through this narrow crack in the earthen pot of the cosmos to which you are but baked and living clay, soon to become cosmic dust again.

The die is cast for all us in our genes which determine our natures and our predilection to disease both mental and physical. Even the virtue of exercise and wholesome living is probably largely genetic.

So dwell not on you cause of death as you may die today on the way to work or as a meteorite hits you having travelled a billion miles. But listen for when the church bells chime or when you hear the calling to prayers as this is to remind you of the importance of the day.

You are right . The cost of the soul is very expensive, for someone to pay and to be forever immortal .  I would like to die when the others don't need me .  I think this would be a happy death , indifferent of the cause.

Since I have spent 32 years in Law enforcement,  I will no doubt intercept a Bank robbery one day while making a deposit,  and die in a shootout with the Robbers.   Or in some other interception of a crime,  but then again it really does to matter to anyone how I die!     DuaneF

The cause of my own death? My heart will stop beating..
Do I worry about death? Not a jot. It's a fear of death that often constrains us in life. We really need to move on and just enjoy our lives for what they are - for as much as we can and as long as we can.

Let me die a young mans death
not aclean
and inbetween
the sheets
holy water death

when I am ninety four
with silver hair
and sitting in a barbers chair
let gangsters armed wih tommy guns
come
and give me
 a short back and insides

when iam a hudred and four
and banned from the cavern
let my mistress find me in bed with her daughhter
and fearing or her son
cut me up into a huderd pieces
and throw them all away
except one
let me die a young mans death.

I suppose as doctors we may yet die at our own hand. I have known many who have died this way and many gifted and healthy doctors too. Perhaps they found it all too tiresome. They were too intelligent and too forthright. They could fake the charade of life no longer. Life bored them. They longed for the long sleep and peace at last.

We don't have euthanasia but just to our north there are a lot of youth in Asia.

Seriously, I think dying in a poppy field sound much better than dying maimed on a field of Flanders Poppies like so many young countrymen did.

We live in a soft generation largely unused to hard shrapnel. We talk of dying in white sheets when generations before us died in mud or with an empty belly. We are ravaged by excess and not want although the worm is turning and we may yet appreciate potato peel pie once again.
