Well i wanted to bust those myths and superstitious beliefs that are very much still prevalent among the masses.Espacially whenever i meet friends or relatives or visit somewhere i see people talking about it.I try my best to show and explain them what is a fact and what is not.

But with certain beliefs i still face some problems.Because they always ask for proof. And i need you all to contribute and help me out in this matter.

I'll discuss those in here.
1-Drinking milk after eating fish causes severe skin problems.
The first time i listened that ,i went straight to my dermatology Head of dept.(as i was a medical student then) and asked about it,he along with his collegues rejected the idea and told me that it's a myth just like all others.I had myself studied it somewhere that it's just nonsence nothing like this happens if you drink milk after taking fish or food containing fish.

Is there any research or study available or done regarding this....just to bust this myth.I couldn't find any...Frown.  Any reference work will be very helpful.

I will discuss others later on.
Regards.

It's pretty hard to disprove a mith once established, people have difficulty shaking off the meme and some feel that denying it means denying a part of who they are (I don't know where they got that idea). I never heard the 'fish and milk' one before, we have other humorous ideas in my country.

Maybe you can't find any studies because no scientist ever took that idea seriously.
Perhaps the best way to disprove it is to trace backs it's origin. If it isn't a professional scientific article - busted!
I usually don't put much effort into trying to convince people of the falseness of their ideas since superstitious persons generally don't understand the logic of a significant clinical statistic and anectodic evidence is closer to what they see as truth.

But I sometimes get very frustrated about this too when they go "Prove that it's not true!!!". No use explaining to them Occam's Razor and the concept that the person who claims a thing should be the one providing the proofs, not the other way around.

So in the face of irrational ideas ridicule and common sense are the only healthy solutions. Maybe this myths will go away with time, I keep hoping.

Yeah! Why do we even bother going into med school anyway? Why read thick boring textbooks mostly full of mythology and legends? The white coat would look just as good on us if we just sat around reading novels for 4-6 years.

P.S: I hope that was a joke.

I totally get what your saying! I'm doing an intercalated degree at the moment - whilst all the students were freaking out about the upcoming immunity and infection exam our course leader said: "Immunity & Infection is a raidly advancing area... 90% of what we've taught you will be out of date in 7 years!"

Very reassuring!!! :-S Lol! Now we're in freak-out-overdrive!! :-D

I did my dissertation into "disproving things we are taught in clinical practice". The outcome was published in the ASME journal "Clinical Teacher" looking at the lack of evidence behind palpating for temperature differences using the back of the hand

If you're interested in knowing more then contact me via the site and I'll see what I can dig out for you

Thanks for sharing it Sarah.Nice work.

Someother myths that exist like, reading a book while lying in bed can effect your eyesight.

But the thing that surprized me was watching TV from a safe distance is usually considered better for one's eyesight.I couldn't digest the statement once made by our professor of Ophthalmology that it has nothing to do with the Visual acuity ,no harm is inflicted even if you are sitting 3 feet away compared to the more than 3 meter safer distance.

Does sitting that close to TV screens has some role to play in children who are in developing phase?

The one about TV reminded me of another myth, that isn't - the doctor's children have the worst healthcare.
My daughter (the doctor) as an infant would sit directly below the TV screen.   She had been at school several years before her teacher told us that she should have glasses, as she could only see the blackboard from the front row!

But returning to the thread track, surely there are more medical myths  than any other in contraception.   A survey in 2009 found that:
The Pill can make you infertile.
It can take 10 years to regain fertility after stopping the Pill.
The Pill protects against HIV.
Just as good as the Pill are CocaCola (as a douche?? or just drunk??), cling film and chicken skin (!!!)
(Survey of 1000 women by Opinion Health for Bayer Schering Pharma, 2009)
