Discuss non-medical topics
Doctors very often seem to have doctors or nurses  as partners/spouses. I've been wondering if having a non -medical  partner is a distinct advantage in relation to dealing with the long ho

The answer to this question is simple....

... my wife!  And I'm sorry but she's already taken!

I find this topic a bit off. It is as if doctors are some higher form of life; some noble vocation above that of other men. It all smacks of professional narcissism or the stuff well-heeled (no pun intended) medical students would discuss over a chardonnay or a Martini in a Business Class Lounge before their daddy-paid trip to Majorca and while they admire the red soles of someone's four inch stilettos.

How about we discuss whom should a fireman marry or how about whom should a Catholic priest marry or what sort of dog a doctor should have?

You are fortunate if you get finding a life-partner right. So many things conspire against the longevity of a relationship. As for a soul mate, I don't believe having a partner means you are joined at the hip. We need space to let a relationship flourish.

You mean farmers don't marry farmers, lawyers not lawyers, and toothbrush holesmen not toothbrush holeswomen?

It's finding a someone who you can live and love with, and the pool will include, to the exclusion of most others, people you meet at work, rather than be a truly free choice.

I'm the son of a surgeon and a nurse, I married a nurse, our daughter (the doctor) is married to a surgeon.     Our son looks set to break the mold and prove the rule; he's not medical and looks likely to marry a teacher, who he met through friends, not at work.

Probably the person the Doctor Falls in Love with,   we should not limit our relationships to career choices, ofetn times doing so stagnates chances for real attachment to other interests.   DuaneF

I'm a medical student and my partner works in fashion. It's really hard to manage a schedule together due to the commitment I have to Med School. We have been together for a very long period and we love each other. I think however, if our relationship didn't have a solid foundation, we would probably have had broken apart. I'm not a doctor yet but already know that the workload won't get any easier! While I continuously strive to find a fair balance between my personal and professional lives, I can't help wondering how different things would be if my partner were also involves in the medical field..

My partner leads a much more interesting life than me, I am grateful if he listens to me but donot expect it, I rather listen to his stories and get an opinion from someone in that other world, or to talk about anything but the NHS! Of course I do at times, but then again, if it is that bad,  I rather watch a good comedy. I tell him the funny stories of course, but you don't need a doctor to appreciate these!

Probably the one that loves you back.  Having one is lucky. With respect to the canine variety unfortunately whilst they are more forgiving than my husband of my many foibles, they are so far outlived by me.  Whilst I am disconsolate at their passing, I being a confirmed canine lover, I can "GET" another one every 12-15 years or so. (The word GET disturbs me at an ethical level. ) I wonder if this is the secret to the Dionysus marriage, that the partner medical or not has only (and sadly) 12-15 years.?? So far my NON medical human husband has survived 26 years of wedded good and wedded bad days.  I seriously say that the triumph of LOVE is that one can know ALL the Flaws and the impossible topics and still stay together with contentment.   Being adaptable is probably a better skill to look for in a partner than their occupation, although rigidity has its uses.
