There was a time when salt was like Gold-----and was a good source of income for the King and the country. From the beginning of civilization it was considered a holy substance its presence at every table was held to be a necessity and a meal without it thought to be profane. Salt is still used today in the baptismal ritual of the Catholic Church. The word salary is derived from the fact that in the Roman Empire soldiers were paid either with the lump of salt or an allowance to by salt. Salt is a good preservative hence a symbol of friendship. Nowadays salt (through a few hours stay in salt mine) is being used experimentally for the treatment of Asthma.
