There was a time when salt was like Gold-----and was a good source of income for the King and the country. From the beginning of civilization it was considered a holy substance its presence at every table was held to be a necessity and a meal without it thought to be profane. Salt is still used today in the baptismal ritual of the Catholic Church. The word salary is derived from the fact that in the Roman Empire soldiers were paid either with the lump of salt or an allowance to by salt. Salt is a good preservative hence a symbol of friendship.

Nowadays salt (through a few hours stay in salt mine) is being used experimentally for the treatment of Asthma.

I have read about this, the air in the salt mine is highly pure,  free from Germs, and Pollen, and irritants.  The environment is sterile, and quite curative.   Sort of like a Dry I.V. for the lungs, if that can make sense. I would love to stay in the mine for a week, good for my sinuses.   DuaneF

It does help n certain cases, I don't think there is a plethora of studies on the subject.
Completely subjective from me: staying in a salt mine made me feel better with my sinuses and the feeling after staying there is of breathing more freely and being relaxed.
It could be the placebo effect, the change of scenery or other causes, and it might have to do with the salt.
