John D,  Excellent,  I knew you must like coffee,  we still have Jolt cola in the usa,  But also have Red Bull,  and Monster Energy drinks,  but Monster has Guarana and caffeine, and the two can cause heart attacks.    By the way, John,  following on the Fanaticism thread,   am I a Fanatic for doing 900 courses in a year? Just curious to your opinion?   DuaneF

In Response to Re: What possible problems/challenges do you see/guess during London Olympics?:
I'm a coffee proletarian and a tea-snob, Duane! I drink coffee all day, when I can get it, but it's instant.   When I get home, first thing is a cuppa tea, Earl Grey or Lapsang Soochong for preference.     Weekends - real coffee fresh ground and filtered for breakfast. But a properly made cuppa tea has as much or more caffeine as coffee.  See here, Table 1: http://www.academicjournals.org/ajfs/pdf/pdf2010/Jun/Wanyika%20et%20al.pdf Our hospital canteen used to sell Jolt! cola, supposed to contain "twice the caffeine"!  But the company went bust and we don't have it any more. "Learn something new every day" - Aristotle?
A good strategem, but needs to be targeted.
I love new words, new to me anyway.  Would that be enumeratable?  Not very useful.

But, three 'courses' a day? Have to say, Duane, that 900 courses in a year sounds to me that either they are trivial, or you cannot do justice to the content of any of them.
Here in the UK, a "course of study" means a structured, usually mentored or taught period of time in which you add knowledge and methods to your store.   What are these 900 courses of yours?

But we stray far from the thread title.  Start a new one if you wish?   "My favourite course of study"?

The answer, if not excuse, lies in the news report, as the message was translated correctly, but; "However, our supplier substituted one font for another so that the wrong alphabet was used for the Arabic message, rendering it meaningless."

In other words a sub-editing error, on a par with the many well-meaning mistakes on signs in English seen around the World and used as evidence that "foreigners are funny".
"Will ladies please not have children in the bar area"
"THE MANAGER HAS PERSONALLY PASSED ALL THE WATER SERVED HERE. "
"Please leave your values at the front desk"

I hope that Arabic speakers and readers will take this event as well meaning incompetence, and laugh in amazement at those funny English.

I see the challenge as trying to see the Olympics as it was originally envisaged. I am afraid my eyes glaze over when I think of the modern Olympics with its sponsorship by multinational companies, its emphasis on money as the main determiner of gold be it on the track or in the pockets of share holders. The biggest sponsors are MrDonalds, Coca Cola, Adidas which exploits the poor  and Dow chemicals which still has not cleaned up its mess in India.

The whole deal is a global money-making business with all the ideals of the original sold down the drain. The Ancient Greeks would be appalled.

Of all the thousands of English firms which made it possible, they are prevented by draconian UK laws to even mention their contribution to the Games.

I don't think I can even be bothered to watch it let alone the Opening Ceremony. It all stinks now. Even London restaurants have had to cover up their names in the streets which have now become the domain of Coca Cola or McDonalds.

As a citizen of a nation which is obsessed with sport. I am alienated from this. Even the housing of the Olympic Village will not be used by the East Enders but has been bought by some plutocrat from Kuwait.

It all stinks and I don't give a rat's hind quarters if Australia gets one gold or the lot.

It is all going down the path of the GFC 2008 magnates. It has lost me. I see no challenges as I don't care and a lot of Londoners who will never see the games will care either.

P.S I fence and I sail. But I am not an idiot.

Whilst the Olympics allegedly will bring in millions/billions of pounds for UK Ltd I feel there is another area where the UK government could bring in quite a sum of cash. Just look  at Foreign  Diplomats failure to pay their parking fines. Hardly sounds important does it – just read on:Kazakhstan is the worst offender in a league table compiled by Westminster, with its vehicles owing more than £189,640 in fines generated from 1,715 unpaid tickets. One of its diplomats, the driver of a black BMW 318i has racked up an impressive total of 471 unpaid tickets, worth a total of £53,820. Sudan comes in second with £108,240 in fines for 1,005 unpaid tickets, with more than half owed by just two drivers who have accumulated £56,320 in fines between them after dodging 544 penalty charge notices. While diplomats are expected to obey the laws of host countries, they are exempt from prosecution under international law. According to Westminster 100 embassies have run up unpaid parking fines with Afghanistan, China and Saudi Arabia as other major serial offenders. "All motorists who break traffic rules should be subject to the same penalties, regardless of their citizenship, nationality or job title,” said Cllr Lee Rowley, the council's cabinet member for parking, "It's time these offending diplomats started to respect the rules and regulations of the UK and pay their parking tickets like everyone else." China, 257 fines outstanding, £27,690 owing Afghanistan, 245 fines outstanding, £25,820 owingTurkey, 253 fines outstanding, £25,590 owingSaudi Arabia, 169 fines outstanding, £15,440 owingCyprus, 140 fines outstanding, £14,500 owingPakistan, 128 fines outstanding, £13,120 owingFrance, 120 fines outstanding, £11,900 owingGhana, 107 fines outstanding, £10,760 owingUzbekistan, 102 fines outstanding, £9,680 owingMalaysia, 89 fines outstanding, £8,950 owingUkraine, 86 fines outstanding, £8,260 owingRussia, 71 fines outstanding, £7,920 owingWhy don’t we say to the Diplomats or their head of state ‘pay the outstanding fines and you will be very welcome to attend the Olympics’.

Where is that information from, kirked?
Because if anyone has asked me, which nation's diplomats are the greatest scoff-laws in London, I would have said the US, whose Embassy have said right from the start that the London Congestion Charge did not apply to them.
]The BBC says that since the CC was started in 2003 the total unpaid diplomatic bill is £58 MILLION, with the US owing £4 million.
