How about a Boris bike? In Response to Re: What possible problems/challenges do you see/guess during London Olympics?: On a wholly personal note, chaos as the volunteers will be unbable to get to their posts in time for their Olympic shifts to start. My shifts start at 0600 - trains on the Underground, Overground and Docklands Light Railway don't start running early enough for me to get to Stratford in time. I belive that this is because negotiations continue with the rail unions about terms for staffing early, and late trains, but the Underground staff have already threatened to go on strike during the Olympics unles their terms are met. As a doctor about to take industrial action, I can only say, "Right on brothers and sisters!" But it may be you shoot yourselves, as I fear we are doing in the Court of the Media. Excellent idea, Matthew, except, as Blackadder used to say, for one tiny problem. There are no Boris bike stands south of the River. And the hire charges are loaded towards short term hire - 24 hours costs £50! As I told in my last "Olympic volunteering" post, http://doc2doc.bmj.com/forums/off-duty_general_olympic-volunteering-anyone-accepted?plckFindPostKey=Cat:OffDutyForum:GeneralDiscussion:ceb84390-0119-4f9e-a8a4-ee6a1159c73cPost:f6105829-b44e-4672-8c3e-c5cc8d2e0b69 I did hire a Boris the other weekend, and a great day, but long term hire is much too expensive. Mukhtar, To our advantage and shame, it is far more common for an non-native English speaker to have some English, than for a native Briton to have any other tongue. But LOCOG has not ignored the language needs of the Games. See this document, "Opportunities for Linguists at the2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games http://www.rln-london.com/pdf/ata_article.pdf and note that among the 75000 Gamesmaker volunteers will be 1400 translators. Also every Gamesmaker is expected to learn simple sigle letter sign language so as to be able to help anyone with speech or hearing disabilities. John |
