Although the question is about alienation, I think the symptom of this is loneliness. See above. This was on the radio this am. (Australian Broadcasting Commission). 

 Parents with children are more lonely according to this article than couples with no children. Children can tie one down, make one poorer and make one work harder and have less time for self. 

The friendships of FaceBook may be illusory. The wealthy may be just as lonely as the poor. Money can't buy many things and there is a limit to how much junk one needs.
