For those who diligently lace up their running shoes and brave the elements to jog at least an hour a week, there is a very real reward -- an average of six more years of life, Danish researchers found.

http://www.medpagetoday.com/meetingcoverage/europrevent/32513

·         This study was published as an abstract and presented at a conference. These data and conclusions should be considered to be preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

·         This substudy of the Copenhagen City Heart Study with more than 35 years follow-up found that jogging was associated with an increase of 6.2 years in lifespan for men and 5.6 years for women compared with non-joggers.

·         The  amount of jogging required to achieve this improved survival was modest -- between 1 and 2.5 hours per week divided into two or three sessions at a self-described slow to average pace.

I think that we all should remember with suitable respect, and no amusement at all,  that the man who invented jogging, Mr. Jim Fixx, who wrote The Complete Book of Running, in 1977, and made his fortune from the jogging craze that followed, died at the age of 52 of a myocardial infarction, just after completing his daily run.

Definitely jogging or any personalized exercise schedule does help to increase our exercise capacity & eventually a general physical as well as psychological fitness leading to increase in overall life expectancy!

I gave up jogging as it was a fast track to a knee replacement for me.
I say eat more fresh veg, less carbs then you dont need to run.
find something that builds up a bit of puff a few times a week.
eg sex and dancing

Do people who dance or have sex three times a week and live on fresh veg / low carbs also live 6 happy years longer?
I'm 50yrs old, 5'7" 11st, happy and not jogging
I'm just saying that jogging is too often propmoted as the solution to a bad diet
just eat less junk and more fresh

Well jogging like everything else, if it is with in some certain  limits will not harm you.
I'll just mention here my experience regarding this.

When it comes to exercise i don't listen to anyone, i just listen to my body.So you can guess there are no hard and fast rules or parameters for me.
I may exert for a  one or two miles  for couple of days. And then change it to some other exercise the very third day.For me there is always a healthy rest period for some recovery if i feel there is something bad going on.

I still have my bicycle around ,because when it comes to cycling i don't trust that mechanized version of it that we all see in a gym.Because what that gym thingy really does is it keeps me reminding all the time that it's just 30 minutes of cycling and i haven't pushed much enough that i did last week and i forget what my body tells me to do.And also it's all about the legs and hips ,there is nothing to challenge your balancing techniques and your response to somethng approaching that keeps you alert all the time.

As far as the treadmill i have no complains, my view is a bit different.Treadmill brings in a good rhythm that suits me.Because when i'm jogging i really don't like to break the rhythm while taking some turn or hop around an obstacle....lol.But still if i get a better track to make a dash i may change my mind and it depands.

I may not opt to go through the whole set of rehersal from bench to dumbells to treadmill, you may see me sticking with a couple of warm up exercises on one day and doing the whole drill the other one.

I'm having a healthy BMI of round about 24 and everything is good for me,so far.
So there is a limit for my body and i've decided to not over exert and get a gold medal around my neck rather listen to my 5'11" structure and it's really working.

Fresh vegetables (root vegetables) and three servings of fruit a day is incompatible with weight loss in most obese patients and this belief that fruit and vegetables are somehow not contributing to weight gain has reached mythological significance. As for increasing exercise to lose weight it is easier to manipulate diet as many have little extra time to exercise formally.

Fresh vege does not necessarily equate to low carb. Just ask an orang utang in the Bornean jungle in the fruiting season.

As for jogging I listen to my body and it says it does not like jogging. It does like sailing and fencing.

Just as a side note did you see Steve Cram is campaigning for those that jog to carry ID. His brother also a very fit runner went jogging and dissappeared. In fact he had slipped whilst jogging, fallen and fractured his skull.  He had no ID and it was 48hrs before his family new anything about it - he actually had the accident just 2 minutes from his house but sadly no-one recognised him.  Cram is reinforcing that along with your ipod please have some form of ID. Most joggers apparently have nothing in their pockets (obviously) when wearing shorts.

That is something one must never forget.Anytime you get out of your home ,you must have something with you for identity/recognition.

It happened to me once 6 years back, i was getting bored on my way back to  home and was 3 streets away with joggers on, so i started doing the stuff , those were meant for.Laughing
Though i did realize that it was late for that.(it was 8:15pm)

There was a police van passing by and they quickly slowed down, those guys turned on almost all of their torches towards me.I suddenly felt i'm getting all the attention so i slowed down. One man asked me," sir will you please show me your ID".I had my wallet on,and produced the thing they wanted.

After that he instantly told me that he thought that i was someother guy running to avoid the attention.I laughed and replied that, "then my direction would have been away from you not towards you, anyway my home is right in the next street as you can see from the ID card."

That was a bit of fun.Wink
