Today I went to an interview in the early morning, for a post of Senior Clinical Fellow / Endocrinology and Diabetes

Though I got the job, it was the most quiet interview I have ever had, competing with 3 other candidates

I covered in my revision before getting there, all Endocrine emergencies....not even one question in the interview ?. It is all about how long does it take you to see 20 patients in a Monday clinic ?
Can you run a clinic in your own without supervision? What is the longest locum you have done ?.... and so on
One cosultant shook hand with me when I came, the others did not..I found it rediculous to shake hand with one and leave the others..... and so a bit of funny day
My friends I would not have wasted my time revising through Oxford of clinical medicine up to the morning , if I know the interview would be like that

First, congratulations on the post. As to the interview, it is entirely possible that they considered the CVs of all 3 of you and decided that you were all pretty similar and so they wanted to focus on more practical matters of the job. Asking you about how long it would take to see the patients is a it strange to me as how can you know given different patients require different lengths of time to see.The other questions were clearly questioning whether you had the ability to work autonomously and independently without the need for direct supervision. The shaking hands bit is, a bit ridiculous, as you said....would have thought that all 3 interviewers would have offered to shake your hand, as I consider that to just simply be good manners and an acknowledgement of you making the effort to go to the interview. Strange that one did but not all

Interviewing is a bit of a dark art.  Usually it's clear that anyone being interviewed could do the job - the endocinological emergencies bit - so what I want to know is how does the applicant cope with a bit of stress, being a bit out of their omfort zone, and how do they think.  We're appointing a person, not a diagnosing machine, and I want to know that the person is the right fit for the department, and we're the right fit for them.

As for the handshaking - usually the chair of the panel shakes hands as they bring the person in, and then the rest just say hello.  At least that's how we always do it - otherwise it's a lot of time swapping sweaty palms....

Well done on getting the job.

I was  going to say the same as DC, so I'll keep it short.
At this level, similar to consultant, your clinical competence is assumed, from your ttraingin and subsequent certification.   It's not a viva!   The question is, can you do the job, within the constraints that it has.

Congratulations on your appointment!   If and when you apply for a consultant job, I think you will find the questions, at the department visit you should arrange to make well before the interview  and at the panel will be similar, and not on clinical matters at all.
