We know induction and hand overs are very important. We often do it in a cursory way though the situation is constantly improving. How long and how interesting was your induction? How long and how interesting is your clinical handover? What was the induction & handover like for your MD or chief exec? A posh school had a long induction and handover last year of many months. If a school takes it so seriously we in healthcare should certainly pay more attention to it. http://successinhealthcare.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/long-smooth-handover.html |

In Response to Re: Induction and handovers - what does a posh school do?: Can't see the linked website, thanks to my Trust's "corporate access policies". (Before you accuse me of being a lazy Government doctor, I am doc2docing in my lunchbreak, OK?) The WHO checklist for theatres is an example of a handover procedure. After being mocked and derided, and been ignored by most of my surgeons, it has now become a valuable part of our daily routine. The opportunity for even minor matters to be sorted at the pre-list meeting is helpful, and it has been shown to reduce wrong side or wrong patient errors. I'm a great fan, take part and encourage anyone who doesn;'t to get on board! John Posted by John D John D, are we still sulking. Be a big boy and get over it. |

It is tragic isn't it? Your trust not letting you read my essential writing!! Even if you want to do it within your own unpaid lunch time!! Let me know what you think when you have read the blog. WHO checklist: If you have read Gawande's Checklist Manifesto you will realise that the WHO checklist was never meant to be a one-size-fits-all centrally mandated single document. Are there are not enough cases to show a reduction in wrong site surgery? I am not sure please post some links. But WHO check list is actually improving many things. It is definitely worth doing it with sincerity. Some in obstetrics have modified it and made it suitable for specific purpose which is even better.
