Update for BMJ Members,  the USA is being hit pretty hard by Hurricane Sandy.   My State New York is undergoing some pummeling,  but I should be O.K. in Upstate NY as the storm is mostly Coastal,  by the Water,  Long Island,  and city area.   Not too much chance of being called up to active Duty in Military as Military Police or Medical field,   as I completed my 3 years service and 8 total so inactive reserve is done too,  however I will gladly answer any call.   I may well be called upon to do some consulting for civil defense on the local level, although we might not get too much storm damage.   These tropical storms lose most of their punch further inland where I live.    This is a 100 year storm of Unprecendented levels!   But as Odysseus would say,  "The Grass does not survive by resisting the wind,  but by bending and allowing the Wind to flow over it".   A True Zen Master!!!     I will update everyone if things get worse,   DuaneF

In my home state of Connecticut, the winds are roaring and picking up (92 mph per CNN). Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit landfall this evening.

All schools, universities, airports and mass transit have been shut down. The Governor has declared a state of emergency. Selected areas are being evacuated and highways closed in phases.

All medical personals have been deemed " essential service" and are ordered to come in till released.

This storm is being called FRANKENSTORM. Will keep updated.

Update,   Hey Matthew and Happy,  and All BMJ.   My area Upstate Ny barely had any problems,  just some fierce winds,  and alot of rain.  Ny City and long island got hit Bad.  Frown  Long Island had severe damage and the city is hit severely!   There is a crane hanging on 57th Street,   City is evacuated in this zone,  but there werealso transformer explosions,  and a bad fire,  80 apartments affected.   The Subways are inundated with water,   Flooded,  which is a bad problem for the Third rail,   Electric,  and the metal with salt water is a cleanup nightmare.    Two Nuclear power plants had to shut down,   but all went to safe mark no problems,  luckily,  or else I would most likely be scooped up and sent to the city to assist,  since my Speciaity is Nuclear Civil Defense and Mitigation!   All is well upstate though,  I am pretty well prepared,  Better be,  after all a  Civil Defense Analyst would look pretty stupid not having my own supplies,  Smile      There will be massive costs with this restoration,    so hopefully all will go well.

I'm sorry for the people of the eastern United States, I really am. Because here in Cumbria we know how you feel.

Exceptionally prolonged and heavy rainfall on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November 2009 led to severe flooding across parts of the Lake District. Some areas of high ground received more than 400 mm of rainfall in a 72-hour period.  The associated high river flows and flooding problems were exacerbated by the very wet ground conditions - Cumbria had already received close to the whole-month November average rainfall before this event occurred. Many rivers in the Lake District exceeded their previous maximum flows by a wide margin, and exceptionally high flows were also reported across north Wales and southern Scotland.

400mm is FIFTEEN inches of rain, and Sandy has delivered 5-10 inches so far.  In Cumbria, the Cocker and Derwent rivers, and several others washed away their bridges.   The Northside Bridge at Workington went,  taking with it PC Bill Barker, who was posted there because it was unsafe for vehicles but in the chaotic weather conditions, there were no barriers or other means of blocking the road.    Further inland and elsewhere, the West Coast main railway line was blocked by land slides, ferries to Irelend were kept in port and airports closed.  The Nuclear Reprocesing Plantat Sellfiled was not affected

America;  Cumbria, Scotland and Ireland know what you are going through.

By the end of November, a temporary railway station was opened in Workington, and a foot bridge built by the British Army to replace the Northside Bridge.  Many other temporary structures were in place to support the devastated infrastructure.  We hope that the East Coast of America can be as quickly supported and rebuilt.
