New research in Nature suggests that our ability to multitask could be do to with the fact that our brains are wired for "selective attention" which means we can only properly focus on one thing at a time.

The editing of sound is said to happen in  the auditory cortex behind the ear, and not in areas of higher thought - as once was thought.

Prof Diane M. Beck claims that  "It's a push-pull relationship—the more we focus on one thing, the less we can focus on others."

This WSJ article uses the example of driving while talking on your mobile or cell phone, and that this type of multitasking simply cannot be achieved without the brain turning a blind eye to one of the tasks - usually the driving.

Multitasking is essential in the medical profession, but are limitations to what multitasking can achieve?  Does it ever risk patient safety />? How good are you at multitasking?

Although I thoroughly agree with the fact that 'The more we focus on one thing, the less we can focus on others', in our routine clinical practice, many a times we are bound to perform multitasking activities. Nevertheless, we must try to focus on the tasks related to our specific requirements.

I have never been able to read and hear at the same time. The action of reading blanks out any external auditary stimulus. Number one son is the same. Wierd. Or not.
