In today's commercial world when noble profession like medicine has become become a mere source of making money by many of the doctors. This situation has raised a question about importance of Ethics in medical practice. Is Ethics followed in today's medical profession? And if yes is it really  followed for patients benefi? Competition in today's world has raised the question of Ethics in medical profession. I would like to know the opinion of all the students regarding importance of Ethics in clinical practice.

I would say yes,  Ethics should be required in all disciplines.   Ethics are the cornerstone of professional conduct.   DuaneF

Medicine is going the same way as the Olympics; down the drain.

My ethical values are not negotiable.

I see some with none. It is all about $ and urinating on posts for more turf.

Medicine is a noble vocation. We are fast becoming run by cartels, share-holders and company directors. This even applies in the nationalised systems which just have different masters. We are becoming more like lawyers.

We are also becoming helots run by the plutocrats while some want to be medical magnates with empires and machines which print money.

I sail my own boat with a small crew.

Is ethics required for medical practice? I would think and hope so as previous posters have said. I am only a student therefore have not got any experience of actual clinical practice but with the competition that you find at medical school I am saddened to say I am not surprised by what Odesseus and others have said.

The question asks whether ethics is required for medical practice? The answer is of course yes and whether people are driven by money or greed you have to worry about the profession if 3 overiding principles are not adhered to- EVEN in todays competitive society- beneficence, non-maleficence AND autonomy.

It reminds me of what Gandhi replied when asked by a reporter what he thought of British civilisation.

He replied to the effect that he thought it would be a good idea.

I note that ethics in Greek is singular i.e. ethike. We tend to use it in the plural as a singular noun. I am pleased to be enlightened as to why we call it ethics when the Greeks called it ethike.

Over to you hellenophiles and cognoscenti.

The Greeks thought of everything.....except paying tax.
