Thank you, Mukhtar, and SURB!

I think that Eid is part of the fast of Ramadan, as the Christians have the Lenten fast before Easter.  For Christians too, Easter is a happy time, celebrated by most of us with a feast of chocolate.

Please, tell us what Eid means to you and your families?
I've seen houses as decorated for Eid as for Christmas, with lights all over, and your post looks the same!

Eid actually marks the end of ramadan. Muslime celebrate 2 eids during the year - Eid ul Fitr,  which mark the end of Ramazan, and Eid ul Azha, which marks the anniversary of the "Binding of Ismail". The essential components of both are special Eid prayers, acts of charity and sacrifice and of course, celebration.

Oh, and by the way, Eid Mubarak everyone :)

Thank you Dr John
Here is some details about Eid-ul-Fitr which will be followed by Eid-ul-Adha after 70 days.

That explains the dates, but not the celebration.

I would explain Christian Lent as commemorating the retreat of Jesus into the desert, to meditate on his forthcoming entry into Jerusalem, and crucifixion.   Sad, complentative days, traditionally of fasting, or at least of abstinence from rich food.   The climax in memory of his resurrection is Easter, a time of celebration and enjoyment.
So, a very similar sequence of religious observance, in the Christian case to do with the death and rebirth of their arch-prophet.

What does Eid celebrate?  I regret, Saqib, that I am so ignorant that the "Binding of Ismail" means nothing to me.

As you will know, much pagan symbolism has attached to Easter, chocolate eggs, bonnets, and that although it is a "moveable feast" Easter takes place in the northern hemisphere's spring, there is much analogue between resurrection and new growth in the natural world, lambs, chicks etc.    Children in particular enjoy this aspect of Easter.    What do children enjoy in Eid?

I hope this is an opportunity for you to tell us Christians and atheists something of your Islamic lives.  Already, I have learnt that there are two Eids!

John

John i appreciate your interest.

Eid comes as a gift or a blessing after the Holy month of Ramadan.During the whole Ramadan muslims follow a strict order regarding the fast.To put it right it's more of a 30 days' training (a hard task it is.)
During Eid there are no restriction and it marks the start of the previous routine. It's a day of joy.The followers are encouraged to eat at a time they were not supposed to eat during whole month of ramadan. Eating sweets and desserts are an act of  "Sunna" ( an act muslims relate to the Prophet Muhammad-PBUH).
The day starts with the prayer(Eid prayer) in a mosque where we meet lots of people and wish them a happy eid day.But before that prayer people distribute charity that is called "fitra" to help the needy,so that they are not left alone.
Rest of the practice can be a bit different depanding upon the culture and environment.

Children get  the gifts ,new clothes ,shoes and everything they want. Moreover they get the money for that, to buy anything they desire to get/buy with it.
Family meetings,Friends' gatherings,Eid trips and the shopping before Eid, makes it delightful for the ladies.

I'm sorry if i'm not able to convey what exactly you have asked for.(Not in the best of my health for somedays now.....aftermaths of a pleural effusion.)
Cheers!
