The news that some visual ability has been restored with eye implants in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa is a fantastic step forward for medical science. It starts to uncover the fascinating potential for a specialty of doctors that focuses specifically on bionics. It sounds like the stuff of science fiction (I, Robot, Terminator, Six Million Dollar Man etc.), but I think it is worth some discussion... Will these be doctor-engineers, trained in medicine and engineering? Will their stethoscope be replaced by a 'Widdly-wee' device from Star Trek? Any other juicy examples from sci-fi of cool bionics? |
