If there is a strike, which I doubt, and you were asked to go on strike, what would it be safe for you not to do? Most of us would feel bad at cancelling clinics but might resrtict ourselves to emerge

I won't be going on strike.
Thursday morning I will go to work as usual and see patients as usual

I don't agree with the government refors, that's another issue but going
on strike sends the wrong message and hits the wrong people.

Why not work better: Offer 20 minute appointments to your patients, surprise then
by giving them a lot more attention.

doctors should never go on strike. but unfortunately, once in a while, doctors here do go on strike and sometimes for up to a week or so!

I think you could just continue treating patients but don't do any paperwork. This would bring the whole system to its knees. No death certificates, not sick leave forms, no Workers Compensation forms, medicolegal reports etc. The world would come to a halt over night. You could happily see your patients, recommend treatment and not write a prescription or path slip but just tell them what they need. No written reports and no one can sue you because there is nothing in writing. You have the doctor's palsy.

Listen to their history with attentiveness, hold their quivering hand but no ink toucheth paper.

Odysseus, how can you treat a patient that needs a prescribed medication, but not write a prescription?
In the UK prescribed drugs need a prescription (the clue is in there) so telling them what they need and heading off to the pharmacy without a prescription is pointless and not providing treatment.

This shows how locked in the profession is to the system which is highly regulated by government. In some societies this would not happen. Doctors are government functionaries chained to the kennel and fed by master.

Odysseus shows us one way to hit the system. Not bad.
Here, when we went on strike it wasn't exactly a strike.
It was more like hospitals and clinics at weekends and holidays.
Elective procedures were cancelled.
Dialysis, cancer treatments, urgent treatments and surgery as well as surgery for suspected and proven malignancy went on as usual.
So, no, I would not call it a strike It was more like really doing the most necessay and postponing all electives that do not endager lives.

It is a very difficult situation. Most of us (hopefully all of us) feel a moral obligation to tend to our patients - whether urgent or non-urgent. However, this edges dangerously towards a concept of 'emotional blackmail' by the government, and a lack of power for doctors.

Perhaps there is a better way to prove our point? I think in practice it has proven difficult to go through with a bonafide strike.

If doctors refused to sign any certificates; (birth, death, sickness) the world would implode. the birth rate would fall, there'd be less income tax and everyone would live forever which would affect pensions and send the country bankrupt.

We are the tick birds on the back of the rhinoceros. We keep the world ticking.

As far as medical strikes are concerned, politicians know that doctors are as soft as marshmallows. They know you will cave in as you have concern for your patients.
