If there is a strike, which I doubt, and you were asked to go on strike, what would it be safe for you not to do? Most of us would feel bad at cancelling clinics but might resrtict ourselves to emerge

If there is a strike, which I doubt, and you were asked to go on strike, what would it be safe for you not to do? Most of us would feel bad at cancelling clinics but might resrtict ourselves to emergencies only. What about cancelling poor Mrs Jone's hip replacement that she so wanted before her daughter's wedding or the
removal of a tumour from the young mother who is distaught. Would you do a ward round just to be safe before going home or cancel your surgeries for the day safe in the knowledge that the last doctor's strike in NZ was it, the death rate went down.

Doctors should never go on strike,  just Like Police and Firefighters,  they serve the public trust,  and are relied upon to be professional.    DuaneF

Well said Duane. The principal of a strike is to hurt someone in order to get what you want. Striking doctors will hurt the wrong people abd ebcourage others to be selfish. Any how how often have strikers gained what they want by withdrawal of thier skills and labour? A decision not to strike of course still allows you to refuse to do certain things such as work when facilities are dangerously inadequate or if your your totaltitarian government wants you to cooperate in torture as has happened sometimes.

how about not signing death certificates?

i'm not in favour of a strike but there are certainly tasks we could abstain from doing which would cause disruption to the system. though, it's unclear how long a strike would last for.

I agree- doctors should NOT go on strike. It is an emergency service. Only routine planned operations that can wait should be postponed if that is absolutley necessary.

I would have great difficulty in going on strike. At my age ,62 ,if thing got too bureaucratic and anoying I would just retire from General Practice. But I would hope the NHS would continue to pay my pensionSmile Much more difficult for younger doctors. Other solutions might be going private or moving to another , preferably sunny  country but perhaps this is a bit drastic.
Interesting to hear that the death rate went down when NZ Doctors went on strike Smile

I firmly believe that doctors should not go on strike.
At all.
I am not saying we shouldnt have the right to- i am saying we just shouldnt do it.
Bad for us. Bad for patient's
As many others on this forum have posted- we are in the same boat as the police and fire services. We just should not go there. If talking cannot resolve it then I doubt much else will.

I would not like to see Doctors on strike.  I am aware that pressures can be immense and political and management processes deeply frustrating but the only people to suffer if Doctors strike is patients.  Whether Doctors can 'work to rule' or refuse to do certain paperwork that is purely related to management rubbish I don't know  but there must be some way to put pressure on management and government that does not harm patients.  Quite what it is I am not qualified to know.

Everyone has the right to withdraw their labour if they feel they are being abused by their employer. What is being proposed in the UK will not result in the withdrawal of emergency care. But anything else up to that point is, in my view, a legitimate protest to make.

Skysteve,
I admit sometimes when pne feels abused, protest is necessary,  but striking is not.  This places one in the position of breach of contract.  Every police job I worked, we were not allowed to strike,  nor are firefighters,  I suppose if a persons house is on fire,  the firefighters might feel inclined to strike, yet they stay on duty,  This is the work ethic I speak of.   Doctors should hold to the same ethics.   DuaneF
