Welcome to our latest doc2doc competition! We're asking you to tell us (and doc2doc's 70,000 members) what's the best bit of advice you've ever been given?

The challenge is to aim to summarise it in no more 140 characters (like a Tweet). We want the advice to be related to when you were studying or since you've been practicing as a doctor.

Entries will be judged by BMJ Editorial staff and the winner can choose from a prize of a one-year subscription to the BMJ, one of over 30 BMJ Journals or a one-year subscription to a BMJ Learning channel! (These subscriptions are for online-only access)

To enter the competition, just post your piece of advice below, as a reply to this discussion. (If you are not already registered with doc2doc, click on the Register button on the top right hand of the screen.)

In addition, the best pieces of advice submitted will be posted on doc2doc and will appear on rotation on each page you click on after the competition has ended.

The competition is now open and will run until 30st September 2012 at 5pm GMT.

Two pieces of advice , from my father Dr BS Lush, Polonius's advice to his son , 'to thine own self be true' [Hamlet Act 1 , scene 3].
Sir William Osler, 'Listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis'.

My guide teacher awarded me the following advice:
"Your tongue must always be sugar coated! Always listen to the patients carefully & always be cool, never loss your temperament under any circumstances."

Get as much out of each job as you can, listen to the boss, know when to keep your mouth shut, and your lies will ALWAYS find you out. Be nice to others and no one likes a smart arse.

The best piece of advise I have ever been given has to be the one given by one of my GP mentors when I was a registrar. He once told me,"There are no prizes for bravery in this speciality. So, if in doubt don't take any risks, refer to the hospital! "

I was told "Don't be the knight with a shining armour! You don't need to be the best doctor in the world or everyone's savior, just be a good doctor!"

 Two more.
Treat the patient as you would want to be treated if YOU  were the patient and ;
if a patient ,  has been visited 3times  in a short space of time then admit to hospital, unless there is a very good reason not to admit !

My grandmother's advice when I was leaving for medical studies:

             "Don't ever shit on your doorstep"
I always remember this when faced with temptation or on the verge of foolishness.
