Following on from Does It Matter Which Medical School You Go To? , how did you decide which medical school to go to?

When I were a lad, we had to choose 5 medical schools to which to apply, then we were shortlisted, and chose a first choice and a back up.

With all those medical schools from which to choose, how did you make your decision?

And whilst we're at it - where did you apply, where did you end up going?  And would you recommend it to a 6th form student applying for medicine?

Fifty years ago, I applied to the same school as my Dad!

In contrast, my daughter researched many schools of medicine, visited some and was accepted by two.  THAT's the way to do it!

John
PS My Dad's old school turned me out all right, so maybe that method isn't so bad!

Having been for five years at all boys public boarding school,, Epsom College. I put Bristol University at the top of my list. I think the fact that at the time it had the best female to male ratio may have influenced my choice a bit.  Bristol is very good academically , although I eventually qualified LMSSA and then MRCS LRCP.

Both my parent went to King College London. They [probably wisely] did not accept me.

I went to visit a number of modern and older med schools and to look at the cities. I also considerd the entrance criteria - some schools asked for slightly lower grades (AAB rather than AAA)
I then applied to a combination  - one modern and one older uni for each set of grades, and made my mind up which I'd like to go to out of the 4 while I was waiting to hear.

Ended up at Nottingham - a nice city with a beautiful campus than even though its next to the main hospital and A52 makes you feel like you're in the middle of the countryside.

I picked 5 medical schools that I'd heard of: Cambridge, Kings, St Mary's, Nottingham, Edinburgh.  All quite different programs, some old, some new, one campus, two in London.  I was offered AAAs by Cambridge, and after that, I knew where I wanted to go.

The Cambridge course was old-skool - 2 years pre clinical; 1 year intercalated BA; 2 1/2 years clinical.  I'm pleased I went there and got the basic science grounding.

Being able to spend 6 years on the river didn't hurt either.

I was luck enough as the only med school that accepeted me was initially my first choice.

I did not apply to any med school in London. Cardiff University. (Interestingly, I did think you had attended your medical degree in Dundee)
