Many newspapers and no doubt rationalists have been offended by the National Trust including creationist views in the exhibtion at the Giant's Causeway in Northen Ireland. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/national-trust-in-giants-causeway-creationism-row-7917687.html I can't fnd exactly what they say, but the NT has issued a statement that the infomation they display emphasises the "mainstream scientific understanding that the Causeway stones were formed 60 million years ago." The NT's own online pages about the Giant's causeway talk about it as " the stomping ground of giant Finn McCool, who lived in these parts nearly two thousand years ago. How else can you explain the Chimney stacks that mark his house? The Organ he built for his muscial son Oisín? Or the giant boot he left on the shore?" so if the Creationists views are part of that faerey fancey , I'd have no objection. However, the press statement goes on to say, "the National Trust is entirely unequivocal in its acceptance of mainstream science." http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/servlet/file/store5/item890121/version1/Interpretation.pdf Either the National Trust misunderstands the word "equivocal" (ambiguous, doubtful, misleading) and meant equivalent, unbiased, or if misundertsands its role as a public educator. The National Trust is bit of a joke in my view - set up by the landed gentry and used, in the 20th century at least, to avoid inheritance tax/death duties and to protect their vested interests. |

You're a bit biased, Steve! If you look at the NT eeboste, you'll find a list of "Places to Visit" Houses and Buildings, yes. BUt also Gardens and Parks, Coast and Countryside, Sites and Monuments. I just read the article you referenced John - it does seem peculiar to mention creationism in relation to a causeway which is believed to be 60 million years old. If a creationist believes that the earth is 6000 years old it clearly raises obvious questions. The NT say that want to be inclusive to other views - which is bizarre when the evidence clearly states the earth is far older than that. |
