Interesting topic and there are many lists that raise eyebrow with caffeine intake! Most of the effects have been covered and message is more is not good. Basically one more point about caffeine, it reduces brain blood flow although it is neurostimulant (as mentioned above): http://ageing.oxfordjournals.org/content/33/3/299.full.pdf and our system seems to have made effort to restore it but in chronic and high dose users, it may not be successful : http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hbm.20732/abstract It is one of the drugs used in the treatment and prophylaxis of apnea in prematurity. The effect is same: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/109/5/784.abstract The recent upsurge of data linking cardiovascular safety (benefit) of coffee may not be solely due to Caffeine content as Tea is not linked (apparently) ! The sleep hygiene with Coffee/Tea with Caffeine (content) is profoundly compromised! It is mild diuretic and might potentially cause constipation among chronic high dose uers.... Hence, it should be taken and decided in individual basis.... |

In the past, it was suggested that Coffee (along with caffeine content in it) was suggested to increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality but now, the coffee has been more of towards positive side:Coffee drinking vs total and cause-specific Mortalityand the editorial from American Journal of Medicine sums up nicely. It seems more data will come .... |
