And, even though US news organizations are widely respected around the

world, the Brits are peeling away American readers.

According to data from research firm comScore, the tabloid Daily Mail's Mail Online overtook The New York Times last year as the world's biggest newspaper website and held the top spot in June with 44.7 million visitors.

The daily mail?  I feel we should apologise rather than celebrate...

Indeed.
This was the media organ whose columnist described the Olympic Opening Ceremony as "Marxist propaganda"

I wouldn't shine my shoes with it.

Someone once said that the only papers left would be those owned by the Murdoch empire and the Daily Mail - the latter for entertainment!

I must admit I do glimpse the Daily Mail headline each morning  - as I change the cat litter.

So who reads it in your house, kirked/
I have to admit that Mrs. D reads the Telegraph, and I tolerate it, all in the interest of political balance of course.

Neither my good lady wife or myself regularly buy a newspaper. I only tend to buy one when on a longish train journey. I travel to France next week by train then eurotunnel so will buy TIME magazine which I usually quite enjoy. I am a Radio addict. Whichever room I am in in the house has the radio on usually Radio 4 or Radio 5 Live. For me the radio is truly wonderful - I can undertake computer work, office work, even dare I say housework with the accompaniment of good conversation or music. My news invariably come from the radio but occassionaly the evening TV news or Newsnight. I strongly urge anyone who has never seen Fox News (The top US Cable News Channel) to try it for ten minutes - it is the most abysmal rubbish I have ever seen. If I want a laugh, quite genuinely I tune in and watch an interview or presentation. Their mantra is 'fair and balanced' but they have these characters called Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck who have the most inane lectures at their audience (who seem to need to be spoon fed) it is embbarrasingly childish and I urge everyone to observe them for a brief spell for some entertainment. Thats the end of my soliloquy.

Kirked,   you seem to Banter on and on about Oreilly,   But have you seen his news on child Rapists, and how he fights to have jessicas law be made in all 50 US States.   I guess that is wrong in your eyes too?   You think child rapists should get less punishment?   I think they should get more!    I watch all news channels,  and read all papers,   but Fox news does cover the crime sections pretty well,  and as a Veteran law officer I like that criminals are being scrutinized more.  DuaneF

Duane, inferring that I like or approve of child rapists on the assumption that I am agaisnt Jessicas law is grossly offensive and potentially libelous.  My beef with Bill O'Reilly is that because he has allegedly got so many viewers it is actually worrying such a large number of Americans approve of his presentation style and tawdry content.  He thought Sarah Palin was great and has these little sections in his prograamme where he delivers effectively  a soliloquy and puts up the words he is saying at the same time because his viewers cannot seem to think for themselves.  Both Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly are a laughing stock by many people over here and they do not foster good debate in his 'interviews' and repeatedly shout throughout. I have just never seen such sheer propoganda and cannot understand how anyone could consider spending time listening to his rants. He interviewed Michael Moore and O'Reilly said he approves of sending young and women to serve in wars abroad but would never send his own son. The clip is on youtube.
