Hi,
I am an FY2 currently working in paediatrics. I have not yet completely decided about specialty training (though I am interested in GP), and would like to spend a year working abroad after finishing my foundation jobs. I am particularly interested in working in France (I have learned french on and off for a long time, and did some placements in francophone countries whilst at medical school). I have heard about foreign doctors finding temporary jobs in France as 'faisant fonction d'internes' - which sounds a bit like locum JHO/SHO work - but I'm not sure.
I was hoping that if I was just doing a temporary 'interne'-type job for a year (rather than actually starting specialty training) I wouldn't need to do any exams, but I'm not sure if this is the case.
Any extra information / advice about this (or pointers on where to find it!) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Helen,
Glasgow

I think it is great that you are choosing an alternative option for a while rather than directly entering into specialty training. I think it has become easy to be drawn into a programme that may not be for you and seems quite difficult to back track towards a different specialty without losing ground in your training. A good starting point might be the BMJ careers pages online. I also thought about different options prior to specialty training and found the pages really helpful. There is an article by a doctor who used to work in Paris  as part of an exchange scheme that may help. Good luck with finding something. Kate.

Dear Helen,

Good timing. The upcoming issue of BMJ Careers (24th October) contains two features about working in Europe. One looking at practicalities and the other at cross-European organisations for junior doctors. You may want to take a look when it hits your doorstep this week....
