A growing number of UK doctors are seeking career opportunities outside of clinical medicine. This may be in healthcare consultancy, aviation medicine etc or entirely removed from the profession such as finance or media. Some say that a lack of experience in other working sectors hinders these individuals in the recruitment process. Others comment on the national investment to train and employ such candidates in the NHS. Should doctors consider careers outside of clinical medicine? |

It is becoming increasingly clear in the UK that the NHS and its Government pay masters no longer value or respect the medical profession. And it's becoming increasingly hard to convince colleagues that they should continue to invest all their time and experience into an organisation (and for a Government) that doesn't give a poo about doctors. |

Absolutely, I have a lot of experience in the field of medical publishing and editing,and would love to go back to it full time if I had the chance. Sadly, I don't live in the UK which I think is the best country in the world for it, and to grab other opportunities outside clinical medicine. A friend of mine did a masters of international health policy in London straight after med school and got a jon in consultancy, and looks extremely happy and fulfilled. There are days when I wish I could leave clinical medicine for good.. |

Congrats on your news item in BMJ, Tiago! Keeping your hand in? While it isn't a career, more a hobby, I think that seriously pursuing another activity is valuable for protection from 'burn-out', and makes you a better person, in some ways, maybe not in others. I mean study and reflection, even research as you would for the day job, not merely participation. I'm an amateur engineer, building cars to drive and race. One car takes about five years! The last used a composite material (paper honeycomb) that hadn't been used in an automobile application before, and achieved an unprecedented stiffness/lightness/cost ratio. I would have gone for an engineering degree when I retire, but the cost of a degree now in the UK would make that a profligate spend without the payback of a better income to follow. John |

Doctors may consider alternative careers, but medical related would be better. Now a days various doctors are doing MBA and they are joining administrative medical field. Also medical profession gradually more IT related. So it will not bad, if a doctor doing some IT related professional course and can join IT related medical field. Getting some professional trainings and certifications, like a Business Analyst Certification really helps a lot. It would also help us to get a job faster. |

I sail, write, learn Greek and am starting fencing this week. Medicine is a hobby I do on week days. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. As for Jill, I shall make no comment as my eyes are glazing over. Medicine was not rated as highly by the Greeks as law or rhetoric. They were right. It is our profession which is in love with itself. We overrate ourselves. The captains of industry are sailing the best boats not the doctors. We are the remoras of society; the tick birds of the rhinoceros of capitalism.

Iam based in UK & am looking for alternative Medical Carrier like Health Care Consultancy or Pharmaceutical Etreprenuership but I am not sure how to get qualify and gain some work experience. Please anybody could advice me in this area. |
