Just at a health journalism meeting run by John Lister, the EC and the NUJ.

One suggestion John made was to have a conference where researchers can present their failed papers (trials which were either aborted or rejected by journals). At such a conference speakers could explain the problems faced and delegates could learn from their mistakes to inform future research.

Would this be of interest?

This could be a rewarding experience to attend a conference presenting failed research papers, & I world like to attend these conferences positively, considering the fact that the speakers could explain the problems faced and delegates could learn from their mistakes to inform future research.
This would be an excellent opportunity to learn from their mistakes.

That is if the conference would be along the lines you suggest, to explain why certain papers and research failed.
But if it would become a show like some other "negatives" of ceremonies like Nobel and Oscar, then it would be worthless.
And by the way, since financing is necessary I believe that what would happen to such a conference. Companies that would like to finance it would likely turn it into a circus show.

Why do you make the assumption that because a paper is rejected it is a failure? Many a brilliant idea or sound paper in research or for that matter musical score, invention and book has been rejected only to become accepted years later as brilliant. Beware anyone who tries to publish anything ahead of the herd as novelty can only be a little bit novel but not too novel as to challenge establish dogma, unsettle the legs of professorial chairs or bruise egos just a tad.

No, we must advance like a fencer in little paces and no long lunges please as this is too confronting and may burst the bubble of our credo.

I would absolutely go to that conference.  My antipodean chum is right - there are many studies that don't finish the way they were 'meant' to, but from those ashes a mighty phoenix may rise.

I ran a number of studies that came to "nothing".  I fought hard to put them in my Doctoral thesis, as they brought up very interesting questions, and ideas that were worth discussing.

Where is this conference?  I'm in.

I have a drawer full of papers not published and as my learned friend mentioned not to mention parts of my thesis which did not see the light of day. Some bits were culled as Mozart was asked to cull one of his operas which had "too many notes".

There are many ideas which are ahead of their time; worthy dogs which  fail to jump through the hoops of fire, editorial scissors and blue pencils on judgement day.

Surely, we should absolutely not consider 'rejection of a paper' to be a failure & I do agree with the better perception by respected Odysseus.
