There's a new BMJ feature about Personal Health Budgets, which are going to be available to 53,000 people in the UK who have ongoing complex health and care needs. This will be a sum of money given by the NHS/state to the patient so that they can choose and pay for their own care path - according to their needs. However, there is a lot of freedom in what you can spend your budget on, as long as it excludes the usual vices of alcohol, tobacco, gambling etc. The idea is that by giving more freedom, this will give patients more choice and will drive overall costs down. However, as Caroline White says: [will this mean money will be] spent on non-evidence based treatments and private sector services? Do you think this is likely to improve patients' outcomes? http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d6532.full |
